This article is based on reddit threads linked here, here, and here, as well as the following YouTube podcast where Giant Bomb’s own Brad Shoemaker confirms the same thing happens to him. At the present time, the official anthem reddit has over 400 comments on it, with no response from the developers.
Worst Bug Ever
This particular technical issue is particularly insidious because of its severity. While crashes have plagued Anthem since its launch on all platforms, they were allegedly fixed during a patch released on 23/02/19. For console players (Xbox and PlayStation) the crashes continued and then a disturbing trend began to emerge.
The Crash would not just crash the Anthem Game application, but it would actually crash the entire console, as in the console will fully power down as if someone had yanked the power supply straight out of the wall socket. “Hard power off,” said Shoemaker during the podcast, “No LED, no nothing. You turn it back on and it gripes at you…like “oh you didn’t shut down properly” …it has to repair my external hard drive.”
This does not appear to be affecting every console player, but enough people are affected and many people who have tried to defend this problem have been shut down hard. This is not a overheat issue or a dust build up issue or a hardware issue. With posts claiming this is affecting all consoles that can run Anthem, it would seem that this is specifically tied to an Anthem software glitch. If it of any help or use, “System Software Error CE-36329-3” message was reported an that the SSD had to be repaired. This error is unprecedented in the history of console gaming, where a game is crashing so frequently and severely that the crashes are now affecting the consoles themselves
From Bad to Bricked
Another post has claimed that Anthem not only caused a hard crash of their Play Station, but has gone so far as to completely brick the console. This announcement also calls for all Play Station Anthem Players to stop playing until this issue is acknowledged and rectified by BioWare. There is no telling which players will have the misfortune of seeing hundreds of dollars of hardware reduced to a glorified paperweight due to badly flawed coding.
Sony Offers full Refunds for Anthem Purchases
While the lack of compelling end game, various other bugs and glitches, it is another thing entirely when your game is actually a threat to the stability of hundreds of dollars of gaming hardware. While BioWare has normally been on top of keeping communications open with the community, BioWare is suspiciously silent when it comes to this particular issue. Time is of the essence because players who fear for the safety of their consoles are not going to touch this game. Compounding the problem for BioWare is that Sony is now giving out full refunds on a case by case basis for anyone who purchased Anthem.
The clock is ticking for BioWare and they need to move fast before this becomes the final nail in both Anthem, and BioWare’s coffin.
