PS5 will release on Holiday 2020. Featuring a new controller with haptic technology and adaptive triggers.
Since PlayStation originally unveiled their next-generation console in April, they know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future will bring. Today Sony shared that its next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5 a.k.a PS5, and will release in time for Holiday 2020.
These updates come as a surprise to no one, but it seems Sony wanted to confirm these facts for PlayStation fans.
The “more” in the title refers to a preview of the new controller that will ship with PS5 when it releases. One of Sony’s goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion. They plan to deliver this with the new controller. They intend to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to gaming immersion.
PS5 will ship with plenty of new immersive features when it releases
To that end, there are two key innovations with the PlayStation 5’s new controller.
- First, Sony is adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback. Thus, crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. According to Sony, you can even get a sense of a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.
- The second innovation when PS5 releases is something called adaptive triggers. These have been incorporated into the trigger buttons (L2/R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers. So, you will feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain. In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller.
