Pokémon is going for its biggest release ever. Nintendo and Game Freak are working hard to make sure this is the definitive Pokémon experience for Switch, and overall, to date. As it is classic for Nintendo, we are learning more of the titles through their Nintendo Directs. Today’s Nintendo Direct was the biggest one so far! There’s a ton of stuff to read, so buckle up! Here’s everything new you need to know about Pokemon Sword and Shield!
Same old premise
Your adventure will remain the same in its narrative core at least. You will be able to choose from 3 starters, which we already have been presented with before: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. The idea is the same, you go through gyms to finally make it to the Galar region championship. There’s not not much of a change in the core elements of the story, but, that can’t be said about the gameplay and battle system.
The Galar Region is really into battles
This region takes Pokémon battles seriously! Each stadium is massive and filled with raging crowds that cheer in every battle. The sense of scale in Pokémon Sword and Shield is very different from any other Pokémon entry. Every gym battle feels even bigger in scale than an Elite Four battle used to feel in the old entries. It was mentioned during the Nintendo Direct that gym battles are even broadcasted across the Galar region.
Oh, the new Pokémons look GREAT!
As expected, the Galar region has a good amount of new Pokémon species to catch. During today’s Nintendo Direct we got a closer look at many of them. Here are the new Pokémons presented:
Sheep Pokémon – Wooloo
Flowering Pokémon – Gossifleur
Bite Pokémon – Dreadnaw
Raven Pokémon – Corviknight
Cotton Bloom Pokémon – Eldegoss (Gossifluer’s evolution)
Finding new Pokémon and Wild Areas
You have free control of the camera in most of Pokémon Sword and Shield! Finally you can really roam around the world in search of your next Pokémon. These open world sections are packed with wild Pokémon and exists between each city. In these areas, new Pokémon will populate depending on the hour and weather. Meaning that each time you visit a place you might encounter totally different Pokémon. Pokémon Sword and Shield will feature full rendered Pokémon all around the wild areas. As well, random encounters will trigger if you walk through tall grasses.
This is by far the biggest surprise and addition to Pokémon Sword and Shield. n certain areas of the Galar region you will be able to Dynamax your Pokémon. This will sound weird especially if you haven’t seen the Dynamax trailer or the Nintendo Direct. But, Dynamaxing is literally an ability that Pokémon in the Galar region have, it makes Pokémon grow massive and size in power. It can only be used once per battler and for three turns only, after this, your Pokémon will return to its original state. All gym leaders have Dynamax capable Pokémons, this will surely add some challenge for these battles.
Max Raid Battles
In the wild areas you will find certain spots in Pokémon Sword and Shield that will allow Max Raid Battles. These battles are co-op battles against one single Dynamaxed wild Pokémon with special abilities. You will be able to tackle this massive Pokémon along with 4 friends locally or with players online. The Dynamaxed Pokémon will remain in this powerful state during the whole battle, meanwhile, your team can only Dynamax one Pokémon of one of the trainers involved in the battle.
The same rules will apply for the Pokémon your party chooses to Dynamax, it will only have this state for three turns. If you successfully weaken the Dynamaxed Pokémon, you will have a chance to capture it. Among these Pokémon, there are some species that can only be caught once you have caught defeated their Dynamaxed version in battle.
The Champion, your rival, the region’s professor and her assistant.
The champion and golden boy of the Galar region is named Leon. It also happens that his younger brother Hop, is your rival. Not much to say here, it seems it will follow the usual rival relationship other Pokémon games did. Still, there’s not much we know about these two characters and their role in the overall story, Pokémon Sword and Shield might surprise us.
Besides these two, this region also has a Pokémon professor. The Pokémon professor in Pokémon Sword and Shield and the Galar region is Professor Magnolia. She also has an assistant named Sonia, who also is her granddaughter.
Each of the gyms in the Galar region are massive arenas that allow Dynamaxing. All gym leaders have extraordinary powerful Pokémon capable of Dynamaxing as well. You will need to go through all the gyms as usual to be able to conquer your goal of becoming a Pokémon Champion.
The new Legendaries
This was an epic moment in the stream. Finally we got to see the mascot of each of the titles. Pokémon Sword and Shield’s mascots are Zacian and Zamazenta. Zacian for Pokémon Sword and Zamazenta for Pokémon Shield respectively. Their design is impressive and the rendered scene in the new trailer is outstanding to say the least.
Release date and duo pack
Pokemon Sword and Shield will be released worldwide on November 15th, 2019. In addition, Nintendo will be offering a bundle pack called Double Pack that will include the two games. Nintendo promised more information on this Double Pack soon.
