Astral Chain was early revealed this year as the next project from Platinum Games for Switch. The new Nintendo Switch exclusive has gathered quite the attention and even more now after Astral Chain director Takahisa Taura has revealed some inside about the gameplay dynamic.
For those who don’t know, Astral Chain has a simple premise. It’s set in a futuristic city where a cops unit fight interdimensional creatures while been chained to another creature called Legions that are in another dimension which is also fighting other-dimensional creatures, easy right?!
Recently in a Kotaku interview, Takashi Taura shared more about the co-op feature in the game. According to Taura, even though it wasn’t quite intended to be played in co-op, it’s an option. However, it’s harder than you might think. As it is implied in the title, Astral chain main concept is the idea of a single player controlling two characters in order to fight while they are chain between them.
However, thanks to Switch’s feature of detaching Joy-Con, having a co-op is always a possibility. According to Taura, they wanted to take advantage of this feature. When the Joy-Cons are removed, you enable the co-op mode. One Joy-Con for the cop and the Legion on the other. However, as a result, the game becomes more laborious than you might think. So, if you were even thinking this will make it easy for you, wrong!
With separate Joy-Con, the game becomes challenging by demanding both players to learn to fight as one unit to control the character and perform combos. The co-op mode was compared to the one featured in Super Mario Galaxy where one player goes as Mario, and the other goes on assisting in collecting stars bits.
However, Taura also mentioned how Astral chain differentiates:
“Because you don’t just have one person doing assists. Both players actually have to put effort into controlling the characters and playing the game.”
As it was also shown on Nintendo Treehouse: Live, this dynamic looks hard to master. Yet, extremely rewarding once you do. Astral Chain will be released on August 30th, 2019.
