After some time we are glad to give you guys our Man of Medan review! Supermassive Games is famous for Until Dawn and its way of putting us in the front row in a horror movie. This time, along with Bandai Namco, Supermassive takes us to the first part of what will be the horror anthology The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan. This is definitely the most complete game, in terms of features, the studio has produced. There is a lot to say about Man of Medan in this review, so let’s get deep into this nautical horror adventure.
After Bandai Namco and Supermassive Games showed the first trailer of the game they let us know the stage of their new work. Nothing more and nothing less than a ghost ship. The story is quite simple, a group of friends decides to go on a trip to the sea. They rent a small boat and enter the high seas. These friends are, well they are typical young adults. Everyone has a personality that you will surely identify because you might have seen her or him before.
As close as possible to a movie
Each character personality makes you feel like you are watching a classic horror movie. Without much to say, the story is not exactly long and you can finish it between four to seven hours, depending on the decisions you make and how much you explore. My recommendation with this is, take the game calmly, explore, and enjoy every moment of horror.
Returning to the story, for this group of friends, as in any horror movie, things don’t go exactly as they have plan for their trip. Without much preamble, a storm occurs, a couple of antagonists appear in the story, and because of reasons, everyone ends up in an abandoned ship. So, what started as a fun trip of exploration and adventure, ended in an abandoned ship. But how abandoned is it really?
A horror Curator
Man of Medan has brief cutscenes between chapters. On these intermissions, you meet the Curator. He is in charge of collecting the horror stories that are part of The Dark Pictures. This detail is quite entertaining, once in a while this mysterious character gives you clues of what will happen if you wish or makes comments on the decisions you have made throughout the game. I must admit that the fact that a character in the game speaks to you directly, and interacts with you and your decisions is a gloomy and exciting sensation.
Horror is best served in double rations
One of the things that I enjoy the most while working on this Man of Medan’s review is its multiplayer mode. One of the things I really wanted in Until Dawn, was to be able to share the experience with my friends. By allowing you to share the experience it radically changes the way you perceive the story and the game. In turn, it adds a lot of replayability value. Man of Medan not only allows you to play locally with your friends but also allows you to play online.
Online or Local Co-op
In Man of Medan’s Movie Mode, you can play up to 5 people with a single control. Before starting the game, a character is assigned to each player and before starting a new scenes’ cycle the game stops so you can calmly pass the control to your friend. Not only is the thrill of sharing the game what makes the experience a unique ride, at the end of each segment every player is assigned a “note” regarding their decisions and what they caused.
The more people, the better. The online mode is somewhat different since each person sees separate segments of the story when it is their turn, and in the end, everything makes sense for both of them and their decisions affect the whole story. No matter which mode you enjoy the most in The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, you will have a very pleasant experience with your friends, that is guaranteed.
Let’s talk about the good
The ship is excellently designed. Only the atmosphere is enough to keep you in suspense and give you a scare. Each room has its own personality and with this a new nightmare. Man of Medan is full of those moments when you would scream to your TV in the middle of a movie, “No, don’t go in there!” Yet, they still go in there. The sound makes a great companion to this sinister environment. I strongly recommend using headphones or if possible using a home theater for this title.
Let’s talk a little about the things not so great in Man of Medan. Although there are certain technical details that we must mention, we must also mention that there is good news regarding this. The game received a day one patch. This has been one of the main reasons why our analysis took a little longer, we wanted to give the game one more try after the day one patch and see if it corrected the technical details that the game suffered. Just in time, although a bit heavy, the patch resolved the technical problems that Man of Medan suffered at the beginning. The game suffered a quite noticeable frame drop and several problems of lip sync. After the patch, this is much less frequent and it is possible to maintain the cinematic feeling of the game.
Man of Medan Review Conclusions: The best of Supermassive
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is definitely the best that Supermassive Games has produced. Its great and fun experience, bot alone and co-op. Man of Medan is movie horror from the most classic’s cliches with elements of surprises that you can only experience from video games. Despite its short duration, you kept thinking What if…? immediately wanting to play another round in hopes of getting a new ending.
