I am not contesting that Fortnite has reigned supreme in the Battle Royale genre. Fortnite did topple PUBG from its throne, and every game has been scrambling to catch up by adding some sort of Battle Royale gameplay mode. The biggest contender to Fortnite currently would have to be Apex Legends which came out of nowhere to hit 50 million players in its first month and may it have a long reign at the Apex of the genre. I believe that Apex Legends is better than Fornite, and I’m going to give you my five reasons why.
1. No Building System
Granted the ability walls and structures is the unique mechanic that sets Fortnite apart from all other MOBA or Battle Royale games. Unfortunately, this mechanic is unbalanced as bad builders are at a straight disadvantage. Not to mention that having a supply shortage in a firefight was almost guaranteed to get you killed and also incredibly frustrating experience.
Apex Legends does not have these problems because it does not have this system. Apex Legends like DOTA and DOTA II relies on having characters that have unique skills and abilities synergize well with others. Simply put: – Unique characters are better than a unique building mechanic.
2. Characters are Unique
Fortnite characters are literally carbon copies of one another. The differences are purely visual in the form of skins and what kind of pickaxe you wave. This lack of unique visuals can make matches feel repetitive, even if they are not. Apex Legends has unique legends who have their own unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. This uniqueness forces players to be more strategic and forces a level of teamwork and tactical cooperation. Fortnite comes down to who has the bigger, badder gun. Apex Legends means Lifeline has to work with teammates instead of committing suicide by attempting to solo Gibraltar. Teamwork makes the dream work, making Apex the superior gaming experience.
3. Getting back in to the Fight.
Both games don’t kill you when your health drops to zero. Instead, you are put in a “downed” state where teammates can get you back into the fight. Fortnite kills you outright if teammates don’t get to you in time. Apex Legends lets teammates recover your banner and bring you back into the fight at a respawn beacon.
That second chance means players feel more at liberty to take risks and get into a brutal yet fun firefight. It adds another level to the tactical gameplay of Apex Legends that Fortnite was lacking – apparently, Fortnite is going to fix this issue. You can read about that here.
4. Ping your Teammates!
Communication is key in any game where there’s a team-fight. Fortnite totally drops the ball here as not having a microphone means you can’t communicate. Other games make use of fancy keystroke combinations to send standardized messages. Paladins (by Hi-Rez Studios) do a good job with their Voice Guided System.
Apex Legends lets you ping just about anything you want to ping: Locations. Items. Enemies. Ultimate status and a whole lot more. What I would love to see become a standard for multiplayer shooters of any kind is a combination of both a Voice Guided System and Apex Legend’s Ping system. Until that happens, however, Apex’s Ping System is a communications game changer for the genre.
5. Character Customization
Apex Legends has fewer and is more conservative with its character customization options than Fortnite. But the quality and myriad of potential customization options let you truly customize your favorite Legend to suit your personal fashion style (visually) and attitude. By attitude I mean you can customize taunts, poses, and animations. Kudos here to Apex for getting their character customization to be as varied and awesome as Overwatch. I’m just grateful I don’t have to see any Fortnite style dance moves.
Those are five reasons why Apex Legends is better than Fortnite that range from gameplay and mechanics, to character customization and communication systems. I’m going to go pick out another Legend to make into a legend – without a cringe-worthy dance routine.
