The first week of the Overwatch League was not what Activision Blizzard expected. For the first week, they had higher number of hours viewed, but a dropdown in viewership in comparison to the previous season inauguration. The second week proved to be much better in viewership, following the League’s trend and having a year-over-year viewership increase.
The numbers are in. For the official English channel, combined with the French and Korean channel, viewership averaged in 160K viewers for the whole week. All this added up to 4.82M hours viewed. In contrast to the previous year, which had a 136.69K average viewership and 3.43M hours watched, this week closed with superior results in terms of audience.
Everyday the League transmits an added hour of content in comparison to earlier seasons, this is due to the Overwatch League’s expansion from 12 to 20 teams. This changed has caused a restructure in transmission, making room each day for an added match. To achieve this goal, matches are being played from Thursday to Sunday during regular season play. Three matches are being played on Thursdays and four each day on Friday and Sunday, with Saturday being the busiest day with five matches.
Portuguese and Russian Channels Numbers
In contrast to the first week, this week is taking into account the newly added channels for this season, Portuguese and Russian. These channels had a joint viewership average of less than 10K for the week. The Portuguese channel averaged in 2K while the Russian channel had an 8K average. While 10K it’s not a massive number, it certainly boosts the week overall, leading to a global combined viewership average of 168.6K and a total of over 5M hours watched.
These numbers show a favorable trend for the season on Twitch. This also shows that the pricedro of the All-Access Pass on the platforms is showing to be a good strategy. These viewership numbers are just a small peek into the League’s massive transmission scope. The Overwatch League is also transmitted through Battle.Net, OWL’s own website, MLG, ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, and some other regional broadcasts for China. This season seems to be ramping up every week in both, viewers and excitement!
